Resolutions and Technology

This year's resolution was to spend more time doing what I really enjoy.
With that in mind, I'm going to be giving a talk on the future of technology to the London Graduate Community at the end of this month.

I'll be using material from IBM's Global Technology Outlook. This is a report produced by our research division each year looking at the future for information technology in the 3 to 7 year timeframe. Its exciting stuff, particularly as this is the same information we use to decide what technologies to invest our annual $6B R&D budget in.

I get to pitch this material inside and outside work from time to time and it never fails to get the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up. It's not just the technology. In fact its mostly not the technology that's exciting, it's the way you can see the technology is going to be changing our lives. For example the section which deals with how the 1 billion people in Africa who don't have any access banking services today are going to begin to get that access....without having to actually build banks and ATMs. For us in the UK who have just been through a banking crisis we might not think that's a good thing but if you think about the impact of that to someone living in a barter economy, its pretty profound.
